Grow Your Own Tea! (Camellia Sinensis Plant)

February 25th, 2008 by tmikuckis

Camellia Sinensis Tea PlantI have recently learned that it is actually possible to grow your own tea. Green Tea, Oolong Tea, White Tea, and Black Tea are all made from the same camellia sinensis tea plant. This means that if you plant and grow a camellia sinensis plant you can make almost any type of tea you want. But notice, growing your own tea does take some work and patience. This is because the camellia sinensis plant grows relatively slowly and is quite picky.

There are two ways to grow your own tea plant. Either from tea seeds or from a small camellia sinensis sapling. Tea seeds are relatively cheap but very hard to grow, while a small tea plant sapling can be very expensive.

I am looking forward to buying some tea seeds my self, and perhaps growing my own green tea. I think this will be an interesting project and I will get back with updates. If you are interested in growing your own green tea (or black/ oolong/ white) then here is some more tea growing information to get you started off Tea growing info .

The same species of plant is used to grow all tea. But different sub-species are used to grow specific teas. Choose wisely.

I just purchased seeds to try to grow my own tea tree. I didn’t realize before, but the information I got with the seeds says that they grow very eratic, taking anywhere from 1 month to 1 year. I am hoping for the 1 month!
