Easily use Tea in Baking

February 10th, 2008 by tmikuckis

Rich Chocolate MuffinA interesting way to use tea is in baking. When you are baking that cake, muffin, or other pastry; tea can easily be incorporated to add a distinctive taste.

Sometimes people try using tea in cooking and come away with not so good results. This is because if you just throw some green tea leaves in the cake mix, your cake probably won’t taste too good. When you just add the tea leaves, the flavor of the tea usually doesn’t incorporate very well into what you are cooking, and no one likes to see the little green tea leaves in their croissant (plus, the leaves often get stuck in your teeth).

Loose Leaf Green Tea LeavesSo, there is actually a very easy way to use tea in your baking, with tasty results. The best way to use tea in cooking, is to create a sort of tea infused butter. This is done by infusing the butter with the tea leaves. Here is my tea infused butter recipe:

First, melt a stick of butter into a small frying pan, then remove from the heat.

add two tablespoons of loose leaf tea leaves to the butter (more or less tea leaves can be added depending on how strong of a flavor you are looking for)

Allow the tea to infuse in the butter. How long the tea infuses is up to you, depending on how strong of a flavor you are looking for. As a rough guideline, just infuse the tea the same amount of time that you would infuse it when brewing a cup of tea.

Now strain the butter

Pour the melted tea butter into a container and put it in the fridge.

You now have your very own tea infused butter. This tea butter is perfect to use in baking or even when cooking something. Just use it as you would regular butter. This tea infused butter adds a very distinctive flavor to any pastry. It is also really fun to experiment using different teas. Something, like pomegranate green tea added to a muffin, could taste pretty good…
